A Number of Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes A Delta Airlines Aircraft into Sydney, Australia

Delta Airlines said the aircraft went through "momentary turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport.

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta jet traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia experienced significant turbulence Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services reported they treated a total of five people, and transferred a trio to the hospital with minor injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and migraines. Those affected were between their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the newest example of planes experiencing turbulence, with researchers pointing out that climate change is a key driver.

There were 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the official noted, clarifying that the plane arrived "without further incident" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on the day in question.

Emergency responders indicated they received a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane landed, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.

In the previous year, 25 people were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "significant" rough air just two hours into the long-haul flight, and had to make an unscheduled landing.

Recently, those on board on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a frightening short but intense of severe turbulence. A traveler passed away and numerous people sustained injuries, as individuals not fastened in lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

In-flight turbulence is not uncommon while flying, and while occurrences of significant turbulence appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are approximately five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance annually, out of a total of in excess of 35 million flights that now take off around the world.

Severe turbulence is categorized as when the up and down movements of a jet experiencing unstable air exert in excess of 1.5g-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a safety belt.
