Federal agents declared on Monday that they had managed to foil a elaborate plot to detonate IEDs at several sites run by two corporate businesses on New Year's Eve in Southern California. The move followed the arrest of individuals linked to an extremist group promoting anti-capitalist and anti-establishment views.
Suspects Detained During Remote Rehearsal
A quartet of people were arrested last Friday in the desert region located east of Los Angeles at the time they were according to officials rehearsing their proposed attack. Federal attorneys displayed aerial reconnaissance video to reporters, that depicted the individuals moving a sizeable obscure item to a workspace. Law enforcement noted that the arrests were made ahead of the group could put together a operational explosive device.
Names of the Accused Made Public
As per the filed legal filing, the four individuals identified are Carroll, aged 30; Page, 32; 24-year-old Dante Gaffield; and Tina Lai, 41. All four are understood to be from the greater Los Angeles region.
Reported Motivation and Connections
Even though officials did not clearly describe a rationale, they indicated the group are members of a faction dubbed the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This organization according to documents urges "laborers to rise up and fight back against corporate power," based on the criminal complaint.
The charges involve conspiracy to commit a crime and owning a explosive. The government noted that further accusations are likely in the weeks ahead.
Details of the Alleged "Operation Midnight Sun"
Officials said that one of the suspects had drafted a step-by-step scheme last month to target five or more commercial sites across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The targets were characterized as "Amazon-type" logistical warehouses.
"The plan was explicit," a prosecutor remarked. "It included a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and listed multiple sites across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."
According to the probe and the complaint, the plot involved placing backpacks containing sophisticated pipe bombs that were planned to be set off simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at five locations. New Year's Eve was chosen as an ideal time as the document stated "fireworks will be going off at this time so detonations will be harder to be noticed."
An eight-page manually written plan, called "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," noted that additional sites could be added. The locations were categorized as premises and operations owned by two different firms tied to operations related to commerce.
Additional Plots and Materials Uncovered
Court documents also indicated that two people in the collective had discussed subsequent strikes targeting immigration enforcement personnel and transport with pipe bombs in 2026. One suspect according to the complaint noted that such strikes "would eliminate some and scare the rest of them."
These plans were reportedly talked over both at an face-to-face assembly in Los Angeles and through an private messaging app.
Pictures contained in the legal filings reveal a desert campsite with what investigators described as explosives-manufacturing components strewn across portable tables.
Official documents notes that the group "each brought bomb-making components to the location, among them assorted sizes of plastic pipes, believed to be potassium nitrate, fuel, powdered charcoal, another chemical, and items to be used as fuses, along with other items."
The plan also contained guidance on how to construct the explosives and how to not leave behind forensic clues that could be connected back to the individuals. The accused had not long ago acquired chemical ingredients and other materials, via purchases from e-commerce sites.
Operation and Follow-up
The FBI took action last week as the group were rehearsing the operation in the desert near a California town. "They possessed all the components they were necessary to make an working IED at that location," an official said.
During carried out search warrants, officials allegedly discovered posters for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's residence that called for "Down with America", and "Eliminate ICE". At another individual's residence, police discovered a copy of the detailed bomb plan.
The individuals were detained peacefully. They were due to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
