Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate involved in the talks said that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The source stated the morning session ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have still not achieve any major advancement," but noted that mediators are working hard to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • Post-war governance of the region

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement required for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Research now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night falls, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area reported another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, health workers reported.
