Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, meaning additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Transport is anticipated to be disrupted.
• Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, wrapping up warm is utterly key.
