Taliban Used Discarded British Equipment to Find Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Hears
A confidential source has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind classified technology allowing the militant group to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.
Data Breach Puts Numerous at Risk
The source, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were advised to move homes and change their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.
Lawmakers are currently examining official response of a massive breach of personal details affecting approximately 19k individuals who had applied to relocate to the UK to flee the regime.
The Information Breach Occurred
A data file with private information, comprising identities, contact details and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.
The incident became known in late 2023, when identities of nine people who had applied to settle in Britain were posted on social media.

Initial findings provided to the committee indicated that at least 49 family members and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.
A superinjunction concerning the incident was put in force in late 2023 and prevented all details about it from media reporting until recently.
Protective Actions
Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the aid group associated with advised Afghan families they were assisting that they had âconcerns that certain devices had been interceptedâ.
âOur suggestion was that they change residence where feasible and changed their phone numbers. These represented the primary information that, if the Taliban had access to this information, would lead to identification and capture,â the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The source argued that government assessment carried out by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the information by the regime was ânot significantly alter current risk levelsâ.
âThe crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.â
The source explained disturbing treatment suffered by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
âWe have had toddlers who have had bones crushed to try to get households to say where someone is,â she testified.
