London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
