The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
âWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,â said Cappa. âThe attitude is that we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.â
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
