The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular series reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
